Ober’s Test

Ober’s test used to detect the presence of contracture of the tensor fascia latae and the iliotibial band.

Ask the patient to lie on the uninvolved side with their hips and knees flexed. Place one hand on the pelvis to stabilize the patient’s position and the other under the inner aspect of their knee. Abduct and extend the hip to bring the tensor fascia latae over the greater trochanter. Now lower the limb, or ask the patient to lower the limb, toward the table.

The test is positive if the involved limb fails to adduct to the extent expected which is usually determined by comparing with the uninvolved side. This indicates the presence of contracture of the tensor fascia latae and the iliotibial band.
